That time in *Barcelona* when I touched the sky. Share a memory from a place you’ve been.
“Greetings from Mrs. Martins classroom! We are amazing students from Lake Butler Middle School, home of the fighting Tigers! We decided to try adopt-a-class because many of our classmates cannot afford school supplies. We struggle to have the basics, including pencils, paper, glue, and folders on-hand for daily use. Often times we learn better by working things out as a group. Mrs. Martin uses a lot of post-it notes, chart paper, and brightly colored markers to make new concepts clear. She has even used over 8,000 pencils this year! Sometimes things can be hard to remember or understand for our class, so we make a lot of charts and fill-up a lot of notebooks in order to help us make connections to not only our texts, but life, too. Mrs. Martin is not a big fan or worksheets, and neither are we. We make tons of cool things to help us learn that are different from a regular class, that Mrs. Martin calls manipulatives. Other kids might understand division by looking in a book, but for us it is easier to feel division. We use Velcro, Legos, Skittles, construction paper, metal fasteners, rubber bands, tape, and lots and lots and lots or baskets to sort things out and make visuals that stick, and make sense. Mrs. Martin Makes learning fun. She teaches Exceptional Student Education in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade, in pretty much every subject - and she thinks of different things for every grade to do. We think her favorite is reading, though, because she always reads to us, and asks us to read to her. She might be in love with books. All of this fun requires supplies we often times dont have. Mrs. Martin does her best to get us everything we need, which includes a lot more than normal school supplies. She has a clothes pantry that allows any student to get the clothes, shoes, bathing supplies, hygiene products, or even bedding if they do not have it. At the beginning of the year, she makes sure every student has a back-pack, clothes, shoes, and every item on their classroom list so they wont feel different or left out. She wants everybody to have everything they need to learn. She buys our classroom books we like to read, like graphic novels, comics, and poetry books. She even lets her baby come into our classroom, sometimes, so we can practice reading. She also lets us listen to music in out classroom and gives us snacks. If you didnt get to eat breakfast, she has a basket with breakfast food in it, too. She will even send food home with you, if you need it. She spends a lot of her own money getting all of this, and we dont think that is fair. Mrs. Martin is an awesome teacher, and we want to make sure she has everything she needs to help us become not only better students, but better people. We love her times infinity (which is a LOT of Lego baskets!) Your New Friends, Mrs. Ms Students”
My wife is an amazing woman. She is a devoted mother, best friend, wife, band mate, and most of all, a devoted teacher.
We live in my home town, Lake Butler, Florida, where she teaches ESE classes for 6th to 8th grade.
Her students got together and set up this page on their own and wrote a little something about my wife (their teacher,) Meg.
Help support the rural classroom of Waylon Thornton and the Heavy Hands’ drummer Meg Martin!
I work at Adopt-A-Classroom and I’m always touched by stories like this!
I have a soft spot for the Chanel 2012 cruise collection. Very futuristic Marie Antoinette - compounded by it being shown at Versailles.
Ran across the Cold World show tonight. Glad I stopped. (Taken with instagram)
